Word Grid Clash

Spell it, claim it, steal it. Most tiles when the grid ends.

Word Grid Clash is a two-player word game in which you swipe a word of 3 or more letters through touching tiles on a grid. Empty tiles on the word turn your colour, longer words steal your rival's tiles, and the most tiles wins.

Swipe a word through touching letter tiles and every empty tile on its path turns your colour. Longer words steal the other player's tiles too, so every word is a land grab and a raid at once.

How to play Word Grid Clash: quick rules

About 3 to 5 minutes for a 5×5 grid. Full rules, options and bot levels are further down.

  1. 1Swipe through touching letters to spell a word of 3 or more, then tap Play.
  2. 2Empty tiles on your word turn your colour.
  3. 3Longer words steal the other player's tiles; boxed-in tiles are locked.
  4. 4Most tiles when the grid ends wins.

Word Grid Clash rules

The grid

  • The grid is 5 by 5 letter tiles (4 by 4 or 6 by 6 with the Grid option), all unowned at the start.
  • Letters are dealt fresh for every grid, with plenty of vowels and no J, Q, X or Z, and every grid is checked to hold lots of playable words.
  • Words come from a built-in list of common English words of 3 to 7 letters.
  • The first grid's starter is picked by a coin toss; the loser of a grid starts the next, and a rematch starts with the player who lost.

A turn

  • On your turn, play a word or pass.
  • A word is a path of touching tiles, side to side or diagonally, of 3 or more letters, never using a tile twice, up to 8 tiles long.
  • Build the path, then tap Play. If the word isn't on the list, is too short or has already been played this grid, the path shakes and you try again. There is no penalty.
  • Each word can be played only once per grid, whatever path spells it.

Claiming, stealing and locks

  • Every empty tile on your word turns your colour.
  • Your word steals the other player's tiles along its path: a 3-letter word steals 1, a 4-letter word 2, and so on (word length minus 2), in path order.
  • A tile is locked when every side neighbour, up, down, left and right, is the same colour (the grid edge counts as a wall). Locked tiles can't be stolen.
  • Locks are worked out again after every word, so stealing a neighbour can break a lock open.
  • Golden tile (on by default): the centre tile, or two centre tiles on the bigger and smaller grids, carries a star and counts twice.

Winning and ties

  • A grid ends when every tile is owned, or when both players pass in a row.
  • Your score is the tiles you own, golden tiles counting 2. More wins the grid; in best of 3 the first to 2 grids wins the match.
  • Equal scores mean the grid is replayed on a fresh grid, and the other player starts. A match never ends drawn.

Hints against the bot

  • Playing the bot outside a tournament, on your turn before you start a word you can spend 20 coins on a hint. It draws the path of the best word for two seconds and never plays it for you.
  • One hint per turn, and none with a friend, online or in a tournament.

Extras

Golden tile
On by default. The centre tile carries a star and counts twice at the end.
Streak flames
On by default. Back-to-back words of 5 or more letters light a flame on your score. It is just for show.
Blitz
Off by default. A 20-second fuse on every turn; when it runs out, your turn counts as a pass.

Tips to win at Word Grid Clash

  1. 1Longer words steal more: a 5-letter word takes 3 of your rival's tiles, so look for extensions such as plurals and -ed or -ing endings.
  2. 2Lock your tiles by owning their side neighbours. Locked tiles can't be stolen, so a solid block is safer than a scattered line.
  3. 3Route your word through your rival's tiles near the start of the path, since steals happen in path order.
  4. 4Go for the golden centre tile early: it counts twice and is hard to lock from the edges.
  5. 5If you're ahead and the board is nearly done, passing can end the grid when your rival passes too.

Controls

Phone flat between you. Each player owns a half, and the far half faces the far player.

  • Press a tile and drag through touching tiles to build a word; drag back to drop the last letter. Lifting your finger doesn't play the word, so a slip never costs your turn.
  • Or tap tiles one by one: tap a touching tile to add it, tap the last one to remove it.
  • Your dock has Pass with no word built, and Clear and Play once you start one.
  • With a friend, the board stays put and only the letters turn to face whoever's turn it is. Your word also shows in the other player's rack, facing them.

Play Word Grid Clash against the bot

The bot plays Blue with the same word list and sees only the board: letters, owners, locks and words already played. It weighs each word by the tiles it gains and steals and the locks it builds, then traces it letter by letter so you can watch.

Easy

Sticks to short words of up to 4 letters and often plays a random one.

Normal

Plays the best word it can see, with the odd weaker pick, and passes to close out a win when you pass and it is ahead.

Hard

Checks how you could answer before it plays, so it guards its tiles and rarely leaves you a big steal.

Tournament
Can be drawn in a tournamentIn a tournament it is a single 5×5 grid with Golden tile and Streak flames on, Blitz off, and no hints. While the app is set to Hindi, Word Grid Clash is left out of tournaments.

Coming soon

  • Online play. Play Word Grid Clash against a friend on another phone, with a turn clock.
  • Hindi word list. Word Grid Clash plays in English only today; a Hindi word list would let it show in the Hindi app too.

How it feels

  • A wood tick that rises in pitch with every letter you add.
  • A chime as your new tiles flip, a swish as each stolen tile turns over, and a padlock click on a new lock.
  • A dull knock and a shake when a word isn't accepted.
  • A fanfare at the end of the grid, with each player's tile count in their rack.

Accessibility

  • Colour is never the only cue: Red's tiles carry a dot, Blue's a ring, locked tiles a padlock and golden tiles a star.
  • Tapping letters one by one works instead of swiping.
  • Every tile is labelled for a screen reader, like "B, Red, locked, golden".
  • The word list is English only, so the game is hidden while the app is set to Hindi.
